On the record-breaking trail again

Spirit of Cardiff has finally departed from Cardiff Docks on the latest in a series of world record attempts prior to circumnavigating the world in 2002. The boat was timed out of Cardiff Bay Barrage at 12.10pm on Saturday 14th October, heading for Gibraltar.

Once there, she will head for Monaco with the intention of breaking the existing 36 hours 58 minutes record for the 773.6 nautical mile journey.

The current record was set by the Cable and Wireless Adventurer in 1998 on the first leg of its round the world voyage - the overall record which the Spirit of Cardiff will attempt to smash in 2002.

The Spirit of Cardiff will also establish two new records - from Cardiff to Gibraltar, and Cardiff to Monaco, bringing the expected tally to five since the project set up its base earlier this year in the Welsh capital.

Says Spirit of Cardiff project leader Alan Priddy: "This latest adventure is another important test for boat and crew in the build-up to the round the world trip in 2002, and in setting a record from Cardiff to Gibraltar, we'll have something to beat when we go back in 2002."

The crew will be reporting on their progress throughout the trip, and we'll be updating the web site with news and pictures. Updates will also be sent out via the email newsletter.
