16 October 2000
Gibraltar bound

For the first twelve hours of the voyage, Alan Priddy and the crew of Spirit of Cardiff were beset by heavy head seas in the Bristol Channel, cutting their speed and dramatically increasing their fuel consumption.

Conditions were much improved when they crossed the Bay of Biscay on Sunday, and they successfully made an unscheduled refuelling stop at Oporto, mid morning today.

They are now past Lisbon and are heading for Cape St Vincent before turning east for the last 150nM to Gibraltar. The wind and weather are currently good, and the arrival time is estimated to be around 8am tomorrow morning.

If the weather holds, they will only be stopping briefly in Gibraltar before setting off for Monaco in pursuit of another record.
