RYA awards for Alan Priddy and crew

Alan Priddy and the crew of Spirit of Cardiff have been honoured by the Royal Yachting Association for last year's record-breaking voyages around the British Isles and from Gibraltar to Monaco.

The award, a framed certificate signed by the Princess Royal, the RYA's president, was made at the association's annual powerboat racing dinner and Millennium Awards ceremony in Bournemouth on Saturday.

Skipper Alan Priddy received the award, which recognises the Spirit of Cardiff's feat in becoming the first powerboat ever to circumnavigate the British Isles, in June 2000. In October, the Spirit of Cardiff broke the Gibraltar to Monaco record previously held by the Cable and Wireless Adventurer. In all last year, Spirit of Cardiff set or broke five world records.

Matt Lloyd, a journalist with the South Wales Echo, travelled with Spirit of Cardiff on the Cardiff to Monaco voyage last summer. He re-joined the regular crew for the awards, and despite having vowed never to set foot in a boat again is already talking about plans for joining in later this year!
