Spirit of Cardiff sets off despite severe weather

At 17.30hrs today Spirit of Cardiff was approximately 150 miles south west of Nova Scotia. She was officially timed out of New York at 15.48 EST on 19th May 2001 as she set off on her attempt to break the trans-Atlantic speed record to Gibraltar via Horta in the Azores, continuing on to set a new record to Cardiff.

The weather is currently atrocious: Winds northerly 20 knots backing to northwest 20 to 25 Monday morning. Fog patches. Visibility poor in fog. Temperatures zero to 4. Outlook for Tuesday, strong northerlies!

Poor visibility aboard Spirit of Cardiff

Life on board Spirit of Cardiff is going to be very tough over the next few days, but Alan and the crew remain as optimistic as ever. It was planned that Spirit would call at St Johns for refuelling late on Monday evening, but due to the conditions she is now expected to arrive on Tuesday morning. Further updates and expected arrival to St Johns as available.
