During the New York to Cardiff voyage Alan Priddy and the crew of Spirit of Cardiff took the opportunity to test a fuel additive which is claimed to improve fuel economy and to make engines run cleanly.

Alan has many years of experience as an engineer in the motor industry, and was sceptical about the claims made by Soltron -- after all there are endless companies offering additives and widgets which they claim will revolutionise fuel efficiency. However, when Soltron offered to supply some of their additive for a test Alan readily agreed as a fuel saving of just a few percent would make a significant difference to the load carried by Spirit of Cardiff

Soltron was used for the New York to Azores sections of the voyage, with standard diesel from Azores to the UK. Despite the foul weather in the early part of trip, Spirit used almost eight percent less fuel per mile -- in fact for the homeward leg the fuel load was based on the "with Soltron" figures which almost resulted in the boat running out of fuel!

Whilst this was not a proper scientific test, the results were good enough for the team to elect to continue to use Soltron for the round the world voyage next year. More information about Soltron is available at www.soltron.co.uk or phone 01481 237307 (+44 1481 237307 from outside the UK).
