4 March 2002
And the name is . . .

Just weeks before departure, Spirit of Cardiff has its title sponsor, and while talks have previously involved large multi-national corporations, the final choice is a lot closer to home - the voice of South Wales, the South Wales Echo. Accordingly, the title of the record attempt is now the "South Wales Echo Around the World Challenge".

The newspaper is part of the Trinity Mirror Group, with whom the Spirit of Cardiff team has already worked in Scotland and Northern Ireland. And the fact that the group also encompasses national newspapers such as the Daily and Sunday Mirror will ensure the challenge receives the coverage it deserves.

"This is a good partnership for us," says Spirit of Cardiff skipper Alan Priddy. "The Echo has already committed to become heavily involved in promoting our 'Buy a Mile' scheme, which gives members of the public the opportunity to become involved in the challenge. Maybe history is repeating itself, but it's interesting to note that the South Wales Echo provided vital sponsorship in the nick of time when Captain Scott was preparing to depart from Cardiff on his ill-fated Antarctic expedition".
