atlantic 2001

Twenty one countries and nearly 25,000 miles in under 75 days!

This is round the world the long way -- round the middle!. We are aiming for Spirit of Cardiff to average around twenty knots (about 22 mph) the whole time, day and night, day after day -- for around two months!. Various combinations of stopovers have been considered in the planning, with quite a few changes being made in the past few months, but the final plan is now in place.

Fuel stops have been planned for maximum efficiency. Whilst fewer stops may seem better at first, stopping more often means we have to carry less fuel with us, and so can go faster. The current plan is to stop at these places:

1 Cardiff, UK    18 Adak Island, USA
2 Gibraltar, Gibraltar    19 Kodiak, USA
3 Valletta, Malta    20 Queen Charlotte, Canada
4 Suez, Egypt    21 Eureka, USA
5 Jiddah, Saudi Arabia    22 San Diego, USA
6 Aden, Yemen    23 San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
7 Salalah, Oman    24 Acapulco, Mexico
8 Mumbai, India    25 Sipacate, Guatemala
9 Trivandrum, India    26 Panama, Panama
10 Galle, Indonesia    27 Kingston, Jamaica
11 Singapore, Singapore    28 Ft Lauderdale, USA
12 Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei    29 Wilmington, USA
13 Manilla, Phillipines    30 Halifax, Canada
14 Okinawa, Japan    31 St Johns, Canada
15 Yokohama, Japan    32 Horta, Azores
16 Hokkaido, Japan    33 Gibraltar, Gibraltar
17 Petropavlovsk, Russia    34 Cardiff, UK

Although the official start line for the round-the-world record is Gibraltar, Spirit of Cardiff will depart from Cardiff with the aim of also setting a record for the fastest circumnavigation from Cardiff to Cardiff.
